4 Day Itinerary

Day 1 – Perth Zoo

Australia’s best small zoo is just 5 minutes from the Perth CBD on the banks of the Swan River.  Perth Zoo is open every day of the year - in fact it has not closed for a single day since it opened back in 1898.

The zoo has a huge variety of animals from all over the world including giraffes, tigers, penguins, a reptile house, lots of different species of birds, a large range of plants and many more animals and attractions throughout the zoo. There are also a number of eateries located in the zoo.

You will need at least half-a-day to see everything Perth Zoo has to offer but we recommend a full day to make the most of your visit.

Perth Zoo's Close Encounters take you behind the scenes to see and learn about their rare and extraordinary animals, up close! Close Encounters provide informative and exciting perspectives of the animals on display at Perth Zoo.

Experiences include:

Behind the Scenes Tours - enjoy being that one step closer to  amazing animals with a unique insight to behind the scenes life at the Zoo.

Keeper for a Day - tag-along with a Keeper and discover the different aspects of their day and how they care for Zoo animals.

For more information, call Perth Zoo Events on (08) 9474 0402.

Day 2 – Swan Valley Self DriveTour

For a winter escape away from Perth, few places are as appealing as the Swan Valley.

This ‘Valley of Taste’ is situated only 25 minutes from Perth and not only offers a glorious tapestry of wineries, breweries, cafes and restaurants but some gorgeous natural scenery – especially in wintertime.

For in winter the Swan River swells to a new high, the countryside glows in hues of verdant greens and the air takes on a cool, fresh, invigorating feel.

And in winter the wining and dining establishments take on a whole new feeling of romance as fireplaces emit cosy warmth, candles glow from table tops and the menus explode with rich and hearty winter foods that will warm your very soul.

The Swan Valley is also a fantastic winter escape for the whole family and boasts a great line up of attractions aimed at keeping young ones entertained. There are also plenty of great picnic spots and the Swan Valley Cycle Path is popular with everyone.

Day 3 – Rottnest Island

Surrounded by coral reefs and shipwrecks, the underwater life in and around the island makes diving and snorkelling both breathtaking and beautiful for expert and novices alike.

The best way to experience Rottnest is to grab a bike and a snorkel and take off! With 63 sheltered beaches and 20 bays to choose from, you’ll soon experience the magic of Rottnest for yourself.

RottnestIslandis also home to a small marsupial known as the quokka. Growing less than a foot tall, the quokka cannot be found anywhere else in the world which is why it is a star attraction on the Island.

Rottnest Express runs tours from the park. Their Discover Rottnest Package allows you to discover a side of Rottnest that most people never see. You’ll be taken on a comprehensive coach tour of the Island. There’s a full commentary by your driver who’s a veritable gold mine of information. He’ll tell you stories from days gone by as well as giving you all the current day happenings.

Rottnest Express also offers an historic tour and if you’re a history buff this tour is not to be missed. The Island has a long and colourful history and your guide will paint a picture that takes you back in time. You’ll see the massive guns and tunnels that made Rottnest the fortress she was and also learn a little about the Islands Aboriginal heritage.

Day 4 – Relax in Perth

Feel like a walk amongst the treetops while you enjoy spectacular views of the city skyline and the State Botanic Garden? Then come and walk the Lottery West Federation Walkway. The Walkway was opened in August 2003 and is currently one of Kings Park and Botanic Garden's most popular tourist attractions.

The Walkway extends 620 metres through the Botanic Garden along a combination of on-ground pathways and a spectacular elevated 52m glass and steel arched bridge suspended amongst a canopy of tall eucalypts.

KingsParkhas many other bush walks and beautiful gardens and lawns which make a great place for a picnic. Many favourite spots overlook the Swan River with amazing views of the city in the background.

When you’ve finished enjoying your picnic lunch why not wander down to the foreshore and listen to the Bell Tower? Walk around the Barrack Street Jetty and enjoy one of Perth’s main attractions. Then stroll 60 metres across to the Ferris wheel and view Perth from a whole new angle.

World Masters Athletics Championships

Western Australia to host 2016 World Masters Athletics Championships

Perth has added another international event to its future sporting calendar after being awarded the 2016 World Masters Athletics Championships.

Perth was named the host city of the 2016 championships following a vote by the World Masters Athletics General Assembly in Sacramento, USA.

The 2016 championships will be a major event for Perth and Western Australia and is expected to attract thousands of athletes and spectators.

Perth had bid for the 2015 championships however following changes to the World Masters Athletics constitution two championships were up for grabs with Western Australia winning the 2016 event. Lyon, France will host the 2015 event.

The changes mean that following the 2015 event the championships will be held every even numbered year, starting with 2016, instead of the current odd-year schedule.

The result is a testament to the hard work of the bid committee, which submitted a top-class presentation to the assembly.

The bid process has been a collaborative effort between Eventscorp, Masters Athletics Australia, Masters Athletics Western Australia, Athletics Western Australia, Athletics Australia, the Department of Sport and Recreation and VenuesWest. Visit the bid website for more information.
